4月といえば

日本の4月といえば、新年度や新学年の始まり、そして日本列島の南から波のように北の方へ咲き出す桜が特徴です。イギリスとの共通点もあれば、違いも様々あります。例えば、学年がそろそろ終わり、多くの学生は4月上旬から休みとなるため、期末試験の準備をしたり、9月の新学年が始まるまでの夏休みの準備をします。そこで今回は、母国のイギリスでは、どのように4月を過ごすか紹介しようと思います。
僕の出身地は天気が悪いことで有名で、4月は特に雨の季節と考えられています。秋の終わりや冬（10月～2月）と比べたら、雨の量が少ないものの、4月の天気は頻繁に変わり、晴れた日が一瞬で豪雨になりがちです。この1ケ月間における雨は「4月シャワー」（AprilShowers）と呼ばれ、より強烈だと言えるけれど、イギリスの天気の中で最も梅雨みたいな季節だと思います。
4月に頻繁に降る雨を好まない人も多いですが、春に生える新芽に不可欠であり、その時期のイギリスは豊かな自然の美しさに恵まれています。咲いている花や青葉だけでなく、田舎では幼い動物の声が聞こえます。
子羊とひよこは特に季節の象徴とされています。イギリスでは春にラムをよく食べます。特にイングランドは肉料理が得意なことで有名なので、ラムローストが恋しいです。ひよこも子羊も、毎年3月か4月に祝うイースターの象徴のような存在です。
イースターは、イギリスの祭礼の中で最も人気のある行事の1つであり、今年は4月5日です。基本的にキリスト教の行事である一方、キリスト教でないイギリス人にも広く認められており、冬との別れと春の訪れとして祝われます。
イースターを祝う方法の1つは、色とりどりの卵です。習慣は国ごとに違い、ある国は本物の卵に塗料や食用色素を使って色を付けたり、ある国は卵に美しい細かいデザインを描いたりします。
しかし、イギリスでは中にお菓子が入った卵型のチョコレートを食べるのが最も一般的です。僕のような甘いもの好きにとっては、イースターが終わって、スーパーでイースターエッグが値下げされるのが、イースターの一番の楽しみです！
イギリスの場合、4月は2つの季節に挟まれている1ケ月である気がします。冬は間違いなく終わっているのに、急に雨が降って暖かい晴れた日の気分を迅速に変えます。私たちが普段食べる料理も、春の新鮮な果物とフルーツ、そして冬の温かい料理など様々です。日本の気候の方が好きだと思いつつ、イースターエッグがどこにも売っていない！寂しいよ！

　April in Japan is marked by the start of the new fiscal year, the start of a new school year, and the wave of blooming Sakura trees that works its way up from the south of the archipelago. While April in the UK shares some similarities, it also has its differences. For example, the school year is almost over, and most students are on holiday at the start of the month, preparing for final exams and summer holidays before the new year starts again in September. So, in this post, I would like to talk a little about what life is like during April in my home country.
　My country is famous for its bad weather, and April is often associated with rain. While it doesn’t rain as much or as heavily as it does during late autumn/winter (October – February), the weather in April changes frequently, and can go from being bright and sunny one moment, to a torrential downpour the next. These sudden rainfalls are known as ‘April Showers’, and are probably the closest thing the UK has to Japan’s monsoon season – although considerably less severe!
　While many people do not like the frequent rains in April, they are important for fostering new growth in spring, during which the UK is blessed with abundant natural beauty. As well as blooming flowers and green leaves, the sounds of young animals fill the countryside. Lambs and chicks are particularly associated with the season – we eat a lot of lamb in the UK in spring!
　England in particular is famous for its roast meats, and a lamb roast is something I will definitely miss this year! Lambs and chicks are also symbolic of Easter, a holiday that takes place in either March or April every year. 
　Easter is one of the most popular annual holidays in the UK, and this year falls on Sunday, April 5th. Despite primarily being a Christian celebration, it is widely observed by non-Christian Brits as well, as a welcoming of spring and a farewell to winter. One of the main ways in which we celebrate is with colourful eggs. The custom differs from country to country; some dye real eggs using paints or food colouring; others paint beautiful, detailed designs; but in the UK, it is most common to eat egg shaped chocolate, often filled with other sweets. I have a real sweet tooth, so my favourite part of Easter is when it’s over, and all the chocolate eggs in the supermarkets go on sale!
　All in all, April feels like a month caught between seasons. Winter is certainly over, but the frequent rain swiftly shifts the mood of otherwise sunny and warm days. The food we typically eat varies between fresh spring fruit and vegetables, and hearty winter dishes. It is interesting to compare this with the feeling of April in Japan, where the re-emergence of local festivals, and new beginnings in schools and offices create a very concrete sense of a fresh start.
